Benefits of Endorphins

I can't say I've ever met anyone who hasn't had a day like this: Its the most stressful day at work, (school, life, etc) and the only thing appealing after it's over is a shower or maybe chocolate and a warm bed. Working out seems like a hassle and the opposite of appealing.

Yet you drag yourself to the gym or on a run and suddenly... twenty or so minutes in, you're starting to miraculously feel better. You can feel your shoulders relaxing, your body giving into a rhythm and maybe even the hints of a smile on your face.

Thank your endorphins. Endorphins are a type of neurotransmitter that sends electrical signals throughout the nervous system. They serve us many purposes and provide us with a natural version of pain medication that won't leave us with any dragging residual side effects. Endorphins also contribute to an enhanced immune system and a reduction of stress, as well as appetite management.

Some people call this endorphin rush a “runner’s high,” or liken it to a feeling of invincibility after a few miles. I personally feel it the most when I’m dancing - when after an hour of being sweaty I know I should be exhausted but I feel like I could keep going forever (which I know I can’t!). It lasts long after I stop working out, when I’m still smiling when I make dinner and jump into a shower.

As much as chocolate is more appealing than my sneakers on a stressful day, I know that the benefits of endorphins are longer lasting.  A high stress/ lack of sleep cycle will lead to illness and a release of endorphins can help guard the body against that. It can reduce the tension many of us feel in our shoulders after sitting at a desk or the pressure in our backs when we think of what we have to do in the coming weeks.

The next time you feel crazed and like the last thing you want to do is workout, just try it for 20 minutes. It can be walking around your neighborhood with your friends or family, running, dancing (even around your room!), biking, anything that you enjoy that gets the heart pumping. Check in with yourself before and after and notice the differences! Be proud of yourself for taking good care of your body.

Enjoy!

Wow, wow, wow! I wish I was a great writer like you, because trust me I am falling short off words to express what I am feeling after reading this blog post. I really appreciate your skills and thoughtfulness.
